San Andreas may not be our main worry

After the recent 5.1 earthquake that shook Los Angeles last Friday, USGS warns that the fault system where this quake happened may be a greater reason to worry than the more widely known and feared San Andreas fault. The fault that the Friday tumbler happened on was the Puente Hills fault system, labeled as a ‘blind thrust fault’. It is a fairly shallow fault system and it is suspected of being capable of producing very powerful earthquakes. This coupled with the fact that it runs under some very heavily populated areas with older buildings, essentially from northern Orange County up through downtown LA to Hollywood, gives it the potential to be very destructive and deadly.

According to USGS a potential earthquake on the Puente Hills fault under Los Angeles could result in 3,000-18,000 fatalities, 142,000-735,000 displaced households and more than $250 Billion in total damages. This is actually not something completely new, this study was published in 2005 in “Earthquake Spectra”  the EarthQuake Engineering Research Institute’s online magazine, it was just brought to light by the Friday quake that happened on this fault system.

The Puente Hills fault was discovered in 1999 and in a 2003 study by Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC) it was found to have ruptured at least 4 times in the past 11,000 years resulting in Earthquakes with magnitudes from 7.2 to 7.5 on the Richter scale. The study also points out that a rupture on this fault is a rare event thought to have the possibility of occurring once every 3,000 years or so…

Jamzilla – coming to a freeway near you tomorrow night

Tomorrow night 2/13/2014 at around 10PM and all the way through to Tuesday 2/18/2014 the Northbound lanes of the 405 Freeway in West LA will have a restricted number of lanes open and at times all lanes will be closed.

This means that the closure/restricted lane openings will last for about 80 hrs. Caltrans recommend motorists stay away from this stretch of the 405 during this time.  During the day two northbound lanes are supposed to be open, but nighttime all lanes will be closed. There are also on/off ramp closures on the stretch of 405 between sunset Blvd and the 405/101 Freeway interchange in the Valley.

This is part of the improvement project that will add carpool lanes to the heavily trafficked freeway.

Jay Leno says bye bye to beautiful downtown Burbank

The tonight show with Jay Leno
The tonight show with Jay Leno

Tonight was the last Tonight show with Jay Leno coming out of Burbank California. Johnny Carson moved the show to Burbank from New York city in May 1972 and jokingly talked about the new location as  “Beautiful downtown Burbank”. The show will now move back to New York to be hosted by Jimmy Fallon.

The show was of course the spectacle you could expect, and more. 22 years is a long time and there were plenty of things and events to draw from in the opening monologue. Jay saying he would now sign up for ‘Obamacare’ (Health insurance through the Affordable Care Act) was maybe the biggest surprise… I suppose he saw the light, finally…

Jay had many of his ‘friends’ visiting, among them Billy Crystal, Garth Brooks and ‘other friends’ including taped messages from Steve Carrell, Kevin Bacon, Bob Costas swigging Jim Beam, President Obama offering the Ambassadorship on Antarctica, Bill Maher, Matt Damon, Miley Cyrus denting his car… Mark Wahlberg being himself. Dana Carvey was a favorite and Charlie Sheen of course. Martha Stewart was being sultry… and Jimmy Fallon had the last word in that segment.

Billy Crystal had a few surprises planned for Jay Leno in the form of a number of guests performing a piece inspired by the Von Trapp family in the sound of music, including Carol Burnett, Sheryl Crow, Jack Black, Kim Kardashian, Oprah Winfrey and others – nothing too exciting really.

Garth Brooks performed what Jay Leno called one of his favorite songs, wearing a “Garth Brooks World Tour hat” instead of a Cowboy hat…

Kevin Eubanks, the regular musical director/band leader was not present, he was on tour in France according to Leno.

Jay teared up at the end while thanking everyone, it was quite emotional. He quoted Johnny Carson, by saying “I bid you all a heartfelt goodbye”.

As Dennis Miller would say “That’s the news and – I’m outta here”.  Let’s see if it sticks this time around… See  ya at the Rock Store Jay.

Grammys best performance

Daft Punk
Daft Punk

There were many old timers and new talent performing at the 2014 Grammys in Los Angeles. Some performances seemed not to well rehearsed and some were just not up to the standards you would expect from performers of that caliber. I think that Ringo Starr’s ‘Photograph’ was among the better ones, but to me the Daft Punk performance with Stevie Wonder, Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers really stood out as the best performance in my mind – Quelle surprise!!!
