Hugo Junkers in Dessau

Hugo Junkers developed the worlds first commercial metal airplane, the Junker F13 in 1919 – a total of 320 of the planes were built between 1919 and 1932. Hugo Junker also developed engines, for aircrafts but also for cars, tractors and other applications such as generators. He also developed hot water heaters and stoves for the home – it seems like his hand was in all kinds of things technical. He was a true inventor and an engineer.

Sepp Blatter announces resignation from FIFA

It was announced today that Sepp Blatter who was just re-elected amid criminal investigations and despite strong and widespread suggestions from within FIFA that he should have withdrawn from the election last Friday 5/29/2015.  Blatter supposedly will not step down immediately, but rather stay on until a new election can be organized, potentially not until next year – I find that hard to believe, let’s see how this plays out.

Finnish people love coffee

As evidenced by the popularity of the Nespresso tent in Helsinki one sunny May day just recently, coffee is very important to the Finnish people. Actually it is probably equally important in any country on the same latitude as Finland such as – Sweden – Norway and maybe even parts of the US – like
Alaska, although not sure the culture is there in the same way as the aforementioned countries. Starbucks changed the US coffee culture, but I’m not sure how easy it is to get a Starbucks up in Nome, once I find out I’ll be sure to let you know.

This is the structure they used to give out free samples to celebrate the two year anniversary of Nespresso in Helsinki.

Spring Arrived in Southern California Today

Did you notice that spring arrived today in Southern California? I might not have known had it not been for the news, because there is not much that is different outside from yesterday – No snow that disappeared, no little spring flowers that suddenly decided to bloom, those are the signs of spring in the Northern parts of the world – here in Southern California we have to rely on the news to know when it arrives. At 15:45 today (that’s 3:45 pm in regular US time speak) we experienced the Vernal Equinox, the sun rises exactly in the East and sets exactly in the West and day and night are nearly equal in time. So today – go outside and rejoice that the long winter is over and that spring is finally here….
